Judith Scott
Judith Scott was an American fiber artist who created incredible wrapped sculptures. She was Deaf and had Down syndrome and didn't begin making art until she was in her forties. She would wrap yarn, thread, and fabric around hidden objects for weeks until they became mysterious, cocoon-like forms. Nobody knew what was inside until after she passed away.

Wrapped Sculpture
Inspired by Judith Scott's mysterious fiber sculptures, your learner will wrap a found object completely in yarn and string until it becomes something entirely new.

Supplies

  • A found object to wrap: a cardboard tube, a small box, a stick, a plastic bottle, a crumpled ball of newspaper
  • Yarn in several colors (thrift stores and dollar stores often have yarn)
  • String, twine, or ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tape or a dab of glue to start and end the wrapping
Dollar store finds: yarn is commonly available at dollar stores, and the object itself can be anything from your recycling bin.

Steps
  1. Choose your object. It can be anything, the stranger the shape, the more interesting the result!
  2. Tape the end of your first piece of yarn to the object to anchor it, then begin wrapping. Go in any direction — there's no pattern required.
  3. When you want to change colors, tie or tape the new yarn to the old and keep going.
  4. Keep wrapping, layering, and building until the original object is completely hidden. Add extra yarn in spots to build up interesting bumps and shapes.
  5. Tuck or tape the final end to finish.

Tips for Parents
  • The "hidden object" is part of what made Judith Scott's work so mysterious and meaningful. Encourage your child to keep their object a secret and let others guess what's inside!
  • Younger children may need help anchoring the yarn at the start. Once it has a few rounds, it becomes much easier to hold.
  • This project can be done in multiple sessions. Just wrap a little, set it down, and then come back and add more.
